Future Social Learning Networks

Meeting on 15.10.2010 was canceled due to illness of Wolfgang Reinhardt

Even if there are heavy transformations in technology, science and society taking place in the recent years, university courses often still emphasize heads-on teaching methods with classic learning methods and learning resources. At the end of a course students had often acquired second hand knowledge, which is often detached from experience-based, constructive learning. The use of new media, the process of working in teams with application of these services as well as problem-solving scenarios remain out of students’ grasp.

The seminar Future Social Learning Networks tries to overcome these limitations with a student-centered, constructive and collaborative learning environment. The seminar will be a cooperation between the University of Paderborn, the University of Augsburg and the British University of Salford (in negotiation). It is the continuation of the successful seminar Personal Learning Networks in the summer term 2010.

During the seminar students will have to cooperatively work on latest topics from the research domain of Technology Enhanced Learning. Together with their fellow students in Germany and the UK, they will fiddle around with latest technologies, open APIs, technological toys, new methods and research results in order to produce working prototypes and architectural designs that reflect the current shifts in learning.

Topics that might be treated include:

  • Social Network Analysis in Doctoral Communities of Practice
  • Tools for Awareness in Distributed Research Networks
  • Towards a University 3.0
  • Smart Devices for Ubiquitous Learning
  • Social Media Monitoring & Engagement Analysis in Learning Networks
  • Interactive Learning Resources
  • Tools for Open Collaborative Learning

The seminar is aimed at master students who want to apply the methods and content of their studies in practical research projects

Readiness for the experimental use of new technologies and collaborative work in self-organized project teams are expected, as well as the independent processing of scientific problems. Active participation in the seminar is a requirement. Goal of every student group must be the (prototypical) preparation of a computer science artifact (visualization, application, web application architecture design, etc.).

The seminar is organized as a blended learning event. The participants work collaboratively on specific projects and issues. In the seminar the active use of social software (Mixxt, Twitter, Delicious, Wikis ,...) is required by all students.
